We are the Rooney family from Australia and are desperately searching for our son Owen, who walked away from the hospital and his belongings in Grand Forks, BC, on August 14, 2010. He has not been heard from since. It is extremely unusual for him to not be in contact with friends and family.

He had sustained a head injury on Aug 12, 2010.

He is 5'9" tall, 160 lb, has an Australian accent and was last seen wearing a dark shirt and shorts. He has tattoos on his right calf and on his shoulder (see pictures below, right). He worked at Big White in Kelowna for the previous two winters and at a restaurant in Kelowna until his disappearance.

We are asking for your help and are most appreciative of any help you can give us. If you can print out posters and put them up, that would help a LOT (visit this site and right click to print or go to the Facebook page and click on File and then Owens Poster to download it). Read below to see where posters have already been placed.

Our Facebook page is Help Find Owen Rooney. To share via Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, etc, there is a row of icons below the word Comments under each post. Just click on the appropriate one. Facebook gives you two choices for the thumbnail you can use. I suggest you use the picture of Owen. I can't get it to be the default.

Do you have any further ideas? Enter any info by clicking a Comments link below. Thanks!!

The citizens of Grand Forks BC, where Owen was last seen, continue to be very concerned about the fact that Owen is still missing. The Grand Forks Gazette recently interviewed Kelly for an update regarding the search for him.

  1. I had a thought..Whenever I go skiing alot of the employees at the Mountain resorts are from all over the world, and alot of them are Aussies...is it possible he got a job on a ski hill in a bar, or working the lifts, or in the concessions?? Or even if you went and spoke to some of the other Australians that do work there, and showed them the picture. They are abit isolated up there working on the hill and staying in accomodations closeby so they may not have seen tv footage, or have internet access to know about him missing.

  2. Hi Michelle, that is our biggest hurdle... young people dont really listen to the news or read papers, so our campaign has been to put up posters in as many places as we possibly can get them that have a high volume of people. everyone needs gas and groceries or food so we try to get the posters into petrol stations, grocery stores and fast food stores, and many people have helped by downloading the posters from the site and putting them in their local area . It has been fantastic and we are very grateful to those who have helped us in what ever way they can.

  3. The recent CBC documentary on Canabiz was filmed in Grand Forks but CBC won't send the video stream to the USA. Are there any street scenes or crowd scenes in it?

  4. FleaStiff, that's a good thought, but the documentary was made a couple of years ago, long before Owen went missing.

Ooops! I thought it was made just last December. Sorry.

Good luck with your continuing efforts.

  6. As long as I'm on the topic of video ... did you ever manage to obtain any footage from what few surveillance cameras might exist in and around the Grand Forks, BC area? I realize its not a major metropolis with cameras all over the place, but .... .

  8. I realize that things are often different in Canada, but in the USA they make jokes about hospital food. So even if the hospital might have happened to have had a snack bar and it might have been open at the time, what is the nearest place he would have gone to eat if he had just suddenly realized that he was hungry but had no desire to eat in the hospital?

  9. Hi Fleastiff, Apparently Owen ate his dinner about 5pm and left sometime after that. There is only one convienience store about a block away, we checked that, Then the highway the other direction with the petrol station which was also checked.
