We are the Rooney family from Australia and are desperately searching for our son Owen, who walked away from the hospital and his belongings in Grand Forks, BC, on August 14, 2010. He has not been heard from since. It is extremely unusual for him to not be in contact with friends and family.

He had sustained a head injury on Aug 12, 2010.

He is 5'9" tall, 160 lb, has an Australian accent and was last seen wearing a dark shirt and shorts. He has tattoos on his right calf and on his shoulder (see pictures below, right). He worked at Big White in Kelowna for the previous two winters and at a restaurant in Kelowna until his disappearance.

We are asking for your help and are most appreciative of any help you can give us. If you can print out posters and put them up, that would help a LOT (visit this site and right click to print or go to the Facebook page and click on File and then Owens Poster to download it). Read below to see where posters have already been placed.

Our Facebook page is Help Find Owen Rooney. To share via Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, etc, there is a row of icons below the word Comments under each post. Just click on the appropriate one. Facebook gives you two choices for the thumbnail you can use. I suggest you use the picture of Owen. I can't get it to be the default.

  7. As much as I am saddened by this young mans disappearance, a couple of things need to be discussed.

    1. As a journalist who has followed this story since early september, and have conversed with the RCMP, it seems this investigation is stalled. No actual sighting of Owen has been made since Aug 14. Lots of rumours, ifs, buts, maybes and plenty of good intentions...but no actual sighting. That has to be a concern.

    2. The Rcmp does not share the family belief that Owen has some sort of amnesia. I understand the reasons why the family holds this belief, but it seems to be approaching a dogmatic belief that is negating the ability to see anything else. For months, every media story has related this belief, but nothing changes. At the risk of being insensitive, the family needs to embrace other possibilities. And they need to talk about them publically to maintain public goodwill.

    3. As an extansion to 2....the search is going no-where and has been going nowhere for some time. The Rooney family seem to have lost the support of the RCMP, who clearly have other beliefs as to where Owen may be. Again, for the sake of maintaining public goodwill, the family needs to have some sort of statement from the RCMP in which the police say they continue to support their search and actively conduct concurrent investigations.

No offence is intended by this post. I sincerly hope the family is right and they find Owen soon.

  8. Hi No offence taken at all.
You are right there have been no concrete sightings of Owen since he walked fornm the hospital.
We believe that Owens mental state did deteriorate while in hospital. We have had meetings with all the hospital staff, and from that came our complaint to Interior Health. The RCMP took statements but as far as we know the staff were not interviewed. Amnesia is a strong possibility but only one of them.
We were involved in the Search and Rescue recovery searches and are very well aware of the possibilites of Owens journey.
We are raising public awareness and thanks to people like yourself and the many Candians who are following our story, and talking to other people, we can reach the right person at the right place at the right time, who has the information we need.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing there are many things that both authorities could have done in the early days but did not. At the present time the RCMP are being very helpful regarding our investigating and awareness. There are people under investigation with regards to Owens disappearance.
    We seek resolution.
We come from a long way away and possibly have only one shot at this and we would like to make it our best shot.
He is much loved by his many family and friends, we would like to take him home

  9. Sharron, thank you for reading my post in the spirit in which it was intended. It may have come across as insensitive in parts but glad you understand where my thinking came from.

I continue to think of you and your brave family and sincerely hope you will be taking your son home very soon.

I admire your skill in crafting such a well worded post. I too have tried to have efforts focused in the Grand Forks/Christina Lake area and on situations other than amnesia but it is hard for me to phrase it so tactfully.

  12. Thanks FleaStiff I have understood your concerns, they are with us everday. As I said, if Owen has a mental issue then we would like to have our best shot at finding him, he is at risk.
Resolution for us is a key issue, whatever that entails.
While we were in Grand Forks, till the snow came,we did our own ground searching with the help of many locals who are still looking.

  13. Where you ever able to search the property to the north of the hospital that the Search And Rescue personnel were denied permission to search?

    ReplyDelete
  14. As far as we know all properties were searched north of the hospital either officially or unofficially, the people of Grand Forks have been amazing in following through with this

  15. I know that the property north of the hospital was indeed officially searched by the designated search agency but that was via an overflight in a helicopter because their "ground pounders" had been denied access. My records are sketchy but they indicate that there was no official ground search. Whether there was an unofficial ground search of that parcel I do not know.

  16. Can you give me an indication of which parcal of land you mean I can look into it, thanks again for your interest

  17. Privately owned property north of the hospital.

North was the most-expected direction since anyone leaving the hospital's picnic table would have been facing in that direction and would have had no particular reason to head in any other direction since north was the most logical and inviting direction anyway. I know the SAR people searched North, South, East and West but they started searching Northward first because they felt that was the most likely direction.

  18. Fleastiff, I live in the area to the north of the hospital. I would like to clarify a few things for you:
    - the area to the north was searched on foot. See this map at the beginning of the blog: http://www.find-owen.com/2010/11/search-rescue.html
    - no area was restricted
    - helicopter search was done to the west of town, in a mountainous, uninhabited area
    - when Owen sat outside the hospital he was on the west side of it. A big empty field is to the west. If he was facing that direction he may have chosen to walk across it, but it is rough and dusty...not a pleasant walk
    - if he sat on the picnic table so that he was facing east, then there is a paved path to the parking area, which is on the east and north side of the hospital.
    - there are some houses immediately to the north of the hospital, but he would still have had to go east before turning north on the first street.
    - if he had any memory of how he arrived at the hospital, he would have gone to the east. My own personal feeling is that because there are two bulk fueling stations (for freight trucks) very close to the hospital, and one is one the way to the Greyhound Bus Station, then he could quite easily have asked a truck driver who was at the fueling station if he could have a ride. He could have been gone from Grand Forks within minutes of leaving the hospital, without even needing to have gone to the bus station or highway to hitch a ride.
    - the area to the north that is in yellow on the map is the area in which I live. There are quite a few homes there. It has been searched on foot, and by local homeowners since the map was put out.
    - everyone in Grand Forks is acutely aware of this situation and very supportive of the Rooney family
